Furniture Size Guide
Buying furniture online is easy when you know it will fit. Here are the standard UK sizes, plus a two-minute way to check your room, doorway and stairs before you order.
Measure in four steps
- The space — measure the width and depth of the spot the piece will stand in, and leave about 10 cm of breathing room on each side.
- The route — measure the narrowest doorway, hallway, stair turn and lift on the way to that room.
- The diagonal — furniture usually goes through a doorway at an angle, so compare the item’s smallest side (height or depth) with the door’s width.
- Mark it out — put masking tape on the floor at the item’s width and depth. It is the quickest way to feel whether the size is right.
Sofas and sofa beds
| Size | Typical width | Seats |
|---|---|---|
| 2 seater | 140–160 cm | 2 adults |
| 3 seater | 180–210 cm | 3 adults |
| Corner sofa | 240–280 cm each side | 4–5 adults |
Typical depth is 85–100 cm. A sofa bed needs roughly 100–120 cm of clear floor in front of it when opened out — measure that gap too.
Beds and mattresses (UK sizes)
| Name | Mattress | Room space to allow |
|---|---|---|
| Single | 90 × 190 cm | from 210 × 150 cm |
| Small double | 120 × 190 cm | from 210 × 180 cm |
| Double | 135 × 190 cm | from 210 × 195 cm |
| King | 150 × 200 cm | from 220 × 210 cm |
| Super king | 180 × 200 cm | from 220 × 240 cm |
Allow at least 60 cm to walk down each side, and remember the frame is usually 5–15 cm wider than the mattress.
Wardrobes
A 2-door wardrobe is usually 100–120 cm wide, a 3-door 150–180 cm, with a depth of 55–60 cm so clothes hang straight. Hinged doors need about 60 cm of clearance in front; sliding doors need none. Check your ceiling height as well as the floor space.
Dining tables
| Seats | Rectangular | Round |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 120 × 75 cm | 90–100 cm |
| 6 | 150–180 × 90 cm | 120 cm |
| 8 | 200–220 × 100 cm | 150 cm |
Allow 60 cm of table edge per person and around 90 cm behind each chair so people can get in and out comfortably.
Coffee tables and TV units
A coffee table looks best at about two-thirds the length of your sofa, sitting 40–45 cm from it. For a TV unit, choose one at least as wide as the screen — ideally 15–20 cm wider on each side — and check the screen’s stand width, not just its diagonal size.
